U.S. President Joe Biden answers questions from reporters after driving a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Xe around the White House driveway following remarks during an event on the South Lawn of the White House August 5, 2021 in Washington, DC. The shift would mean that EV sales would not need to rise sharply until after 2030. Reuters previously reported that the White House could enact proposed Environmental Protection Agency regulations as soon as March that would mandate dramatic reductions in tailpipe emissions. The administration proposal would require boosting U.S. EV market share to 67% by 2032 from less than 8% in 2023. Automakers and the AAI have urged the Biden administration to slow the proposed ramp-up in EV sales.

Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, poses during a presentation at the New York International Auto Show in Manhattan, New York, on April 5, 2023. Stellantis won't sell electrified vehicles such as hybrids and all-electric models at a loss like other automakers have, CEO Carlos Tavares said Friday. "Being in Europe as much as in the U.S., we are making money with the electrified vehicles," Tavares said during a roundtable Friday. "We are making money, and it is in our discipline to make sure that whatever we sell we make money with because, if not, then the company will not be sustainable." Stellantis currently has 25 EVs available globally and expects to launch another 23 through the end of this year.

The Biden administration on Friday issued long-awaited guidance that will limit Chinese content in batteries eligible for electric vehicle tax credits starting next year. The FEOC rules come into effect in 2024 for completed batteries and 2025 for critical minerals used to produce them. Treasury said the few materials being exempted each account for less than 2% of the value of battery critical minerals. The rules are expected to further reduce the number of electric vehicles eligible for EV tax credits. Earlier this year, new battery and mineral sourcing requirements took effect with price and buyer income eligibility caps from Jan. 1.

Further uptake of the blockbuster weight loss drugs rocking the health-care world can bode well for select energy drink makers and fitness-focused retailers, Stifel said. Indeed, Stifel found an additional 21% said they would be interested in the drug if it showed proven results, was widely available and had approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for weight loss specifically. Wegovy was approved to treat weight loss in 2022 and Eli Lilly's Zepbound recently received that same nod . These shifting food and health habits can also affect consumer spending — and stocks tied to specific retailers, Astrachan said. If half of those interested in GLP-1 drugs begin taking them, the firm expects U.S. energy drink consumption could increase about 2%.

Ford envisions at least three new electric vehicles that will preserve jobs at several factories. Those and other closely held production plans by Detroit's automakers have emerged in details of the tentative contract agreements that ended the six-week strikes by the United Auto Workers union. The UAW's success in gaining commitments from the companies to build new electric vehicles at several factories represented a particular achievement. The automakers have all embraced the transition to electric vehicles as a large-scale and long-term commitment. Stellantis declined to comment, saying it would wait for workers to vote first before discussing the deal. Stellantis will also offer $50,000 buyouts in 2024 and 2026 to UAW production workers, allowing it to cut costs by hiring fresh workers who start at lower wages. The UAW said the Stellantis investment commitments total about $19 billion, but that includes some previously announced plans. CNN —Toyota has joined the growing list of automakers that have decided to switch to using Tesla’s charging standard. Beginning in 2025 all Toyota electric vehicles sold in the US will have charging ports designed to work with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard (NACS), rather than the Combined Charging System plugs automakers in the US now use. Toyota’s announcement means that all of America’s best-selling automakers — Toyota ranks second only to General Motors in US sales — have agreed to switch to Tesla’s standard in the next few years. Tesla chief executive Elon Musk announced in November of last year that he was inviting other automakers and charging companies to adopt Tesla’s NACS. Major charging companies have announced they will offer both types of cables to service electric vehicles with either type of charging port.

New York CNN —US new car sales soared in the third quarter, despite the combination of a strike at General Motors, Ford and Stellantis, high prices and rising interest rates. “New-vehicle sales have remained somewhat consistent as pent-up demand keeps sales afloat despite economic challenges,” said Jessica Caldwell, Edmunds’ head of insights. “However, the landscape can change dramatically, and quickly, if the strike continues.”Rising ratesAnother factor that could slow sales at all automakers is rising interest rates, which is raising the average car payment to record levels. It’s the highest average interest rates for both types of loans since the start of the Great Recession and financial crisis of 2007. “Spiked interest rates remain the biggest impediment to affordability in both the new and used car markets today,” said Caldwell.

Sept 29 (Reuters) - The United Auto Workers (UAW) union on Friday expanded its coordinated U.S. strike, this time targeting a plant at General Motors (GM.N) and Ford Motor (F.N) but refraining from an additional walkout from Chrysler parent Stellantis (STLAM.MI). The UAW, which represents 46,000 GM workers, 57,000 Ford employees and 43,000 Stellantis workers, kicked off negotiations with the companies in July. Contract talks between the UAW and the Detroit automakers in past years had gone on until the strike deadline and beyond. Talks between Ford and UAW negotiators stalled during the week after the two appeared to be close to an agreement, sources familiar with the development said. In fiscal 2019, GM's fourth-quarter profit took a $3.6 billion hit from a 40-day UAW strike.
